KKP Creates Independent Shrimp Production

In an effort to improve the system for providing superior vaname shrimp broodstock, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) through the Directorate General of Aquaculture (DJPB) has created a Superior Shrimp Parent Breeding Program as a form of national shrimp production independence. Director General of Aquaculture, Tb Haeru Rahayu conveyed that in order to smooth the breeding program for superior shrimp broodstock, or the National Shrimp Breeding Program, as a prime mover to produce superior white shrimp broodstock, DJPB will collaborate with Oceanic Institute of Hawaii Pacific University, a research institute located in Honolulu to develop superior broodstock, with the aim that Indonesia can produce superior vaname broodstock independently.

Tb Haeru Rahayu appointed the Superior Shrimp and Shellfish Parent Production Center (BPIU2K) Karangasem, Bali as the Nucleus Center which acts as the spearhead of DJPB KKP in providing superior and quality white shrimp broodstock in Indonesia. Meanwhile, BPBAP Takalar and BPBAP Ujung Batee as the Multiplication Broodstock Center (MBC). "Let's show that BPIU2K in Karangasem can really answer the current challenge that the KKP is planning, namely a breakthrough program for developing export-oriented aquaculture with superior commodities, one of which is shrimp. And in order to achieve the national shrimp production target of 2 million tons in 2024," explained Tebe in his statement, Tuesday (12/4/2022). According to him, currently BPIU2K Karangasem already has facilities, including the Nucleus Center as a place for the production of white vaname shrimp fry, then Performance Test Ponds for the multi-location test of Vannamei shrimp, as well as the Multiplication Center facility as a breeding ground for prospective broodstock and broodstock of Vannamei shrimp. "At Balai Karangasem, there are two strategic approaches that have been carried out, namely family selection and individual selection," continued Tebe. In addition, DJPB has also run the Vaname Naupli Center Program, in which DJPB is collaborating with PT. Superior Seeds (Global Gene Shrimp). PT. Bibit Unggul provided a grant of 1,400 parent pairs of vaname to be managed in 3 UPTs as naupli centers, namely BBPBAP Jepara, BPBAP Situbondo and BPBAP Takalar.

In the Vaname Naupli Center Program, even BBPBAP Jepara has received a grant of 600 pairs of vaname shrimp broodstock from PT. Seedlings Unggul in early March 2022. As for BPBAP Situbondo and BPBAP Takalar, each will receive 400 pairs of broodstock in early June 2022. Meanwhile, Head of the Karangasem Center for Superior Shrimp and Shellfish Parent Production (BPIU2K), Wendy Tri Prabowo said that Indonesia could develop high-quality broodstock of high-quality vaname shrimp. Even now, BPIU2K Karangasem has developed a parent of Vannamei Dewata TL+ shrimp with adaptive characters to environmental challenges/local conditions. He does not stop there, he hopes that the breeding program for superior shrimp broodstock will continue for the sake of self-sufficiency in national shrimp production. He also plans that in 2023, supported by the team's collaborative approach in the field of genomics and best practices, BPIU2K Karangasem will also distribute adaptive strain types to low protein. Previously, the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KP), Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, said that in 2024 the national shrimp production was targeted at 2 million tons. "I expect support from all stakeholders both at the center and in the regions to advance the marine and fisheries sector so that they can make a positive contribution to the national economy and the welfare of the nation," he said.
