KKP: There are 12.01 Million Tons of Potential Fish per Year

The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) recorded the latest data on fish potential in Indonesian waters. The result is 12.01 million tons of potential fish per year. This refers to the 11 Fisheries Management Areas of the Republic of Indonesia (WPPNRI) following the issuance of the Decree of the Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (Kepmen KP) Number 19 of 2022. According to Kepmen KP No. 19/2022, the total estimated potential for fish resources in 11 WPPNRI is 12.01 million tons per year with a JTB of 8.6 million tons per year. The potential estimates are divided into nine groups of fish resources, namely demersal fish, reef fish, small pelagics, squid, Penaeid shrimp, lobsters, small crabs, crabs and large pelagics.

“How is this process done? There is data collection conducted by fellow researchers from various sources. There are those from the survey using research vessels, observers, and also using fishery statistics. Then the data is processed and analyzed using existing stock assessment models of fish resources. Now, from the results of this analysis, the estimation results are carried out in all WPPs and also per group of fish species, "said Chairman of the National Commission for Fish Studies (Komnas Kajiskan) Prof. Indra Jaya in the KKP Maritime Discussion dialogue at the KKP Media Center, Central Jakarta, Wednesday (6/4/2022). Director of Fish Resource Management at the Directorate General of Capture Fisheries at KKP, Ridwan Mulyana, said that the calculation methodology used to determine potential fish resource estimates is currently much better than before. Among them are using international standard hydroacoustic fisheries data.
“The current methodology is better than in 2016 and 2017. Several things, such as the catch data that was based on WPP previously based on coastal fisheries, then there is also a complete integrated Onedata. Regarding biomass and distribution data, hydroacoustic data have been used with FAO standards. Now, there is also acoustics with a split system. In the past, it was called dual beam, now it is split beam, which can already identify the type of fish," said Ridwan.
