KKP: Cultivation village drives the economic movement of fishing communities

The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) stated that the aquaculture village, which is one of the priority programs initiated by the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, is believed to encourage economic movement in the marine and fisheries sector. "The aquaculture village will encourage an integrated business pattern based on superior commodities and local wisdom, so it is hoped that it will have an impact on the movement of the community's economy," said Director General of Aquaculture KKP Tb Haeru Rahayu in a release in Jakarta, Monday. According to him, one of the goals of developing aquaculture is to increase food security which is developed through superior commodities based on local wisdom. As is known, one of the KKP's breakthrough programs in 2020-2024 is the construction of freshwater, brackish and marine aquaculture villages based on local wisdom. One example of the realization of the aquaculture village program recently is the Center for Brackish Water Cultivation Fisheries (BBPBAP) Jepara which has designated four districts in North Kalimantan Province as locus for the development of aquaculture village areas. The four areas, Bulungan and Tana Tidung districts as tiger prawn villages, Nunukan districts as seaweed villages, and Tarakan districts as crab villages.

Meanwhile, Head of BBPBAP Jepara, Supito in his statement said, 2022 is the beginning of the implementation of the development of aquaculture villages throughout Indonesia. North Kalimantan Province, according to him, through four districts is the focus to be pushed to become a center for cultivation areas based on local superior commodities. "These four regencies are potential bases for superior commodities, namely seaweed, tiger prawns, and crabs. We are targeting the existence of aquaculture village to accelerate its development more massively and of course directly contribute to increasing national fish production. Moreover, these three superior commodities are export targets ," he said. Supito also confirmed the declaration of aquaculture village through a comprehensive planning study. According to him, his party will start a measurable plan, so that later there will be a focus on achieving impacts, especially on the socio-economic aspects. "We hope that there will be a local economic movement created from this program, of course through multi-stakeholder cooperation," he said.
