The Ministry of Agriculture said that shallot production is in surplus and can be met domestically until May 2022. That way, there is no need to import shallots. This was revealed from the prognosis data for the strategic food commodity balance of the Ministry of Agriculture, which was presented in a working meeting with Commission IV of the DPR on Tuesday (22/3). Based on this data, the supply of shallots is estimated to reach 587,626 tons by the end of May 2022. Meanwhile, the total domestic demand by the end of May 2022 was 495,191 tons. So there is a surplus of 92,435 tons of shallots.
For the commodities of rice, corn, shallots, red chilies, meat, chicken eggs, and cooking oil, the availability is estimated to be met from domestic production, said Minister of Agriculture Syahrul Yasin Limpo. However, Member of Commission IV DPR RI Suhardi Duka asked the Ministry of Agriculture to ensure the accuracy of the data. Because, based on data received at the beginning of this year, shallots experienced crop failure. And the Ministry of Trade has applied for a shallot import permit and requested approval from the Ministry of Agriculture. So which one is the truth? From the data from the Ministry of Agriculture, shallots are still in surplus. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Trade wants imports, "said Suhardi.
