Jokowi Calls 2022 an Important Moment for the Development of Electric Vehicles

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) assessed that 2022 will be an important moment for Indonesia to develop an electric car ecosystem. It will begin with the development of electric vehicle batteries. This is indicated by the presence of several investors who are preparing to start construction, to process nickel and cobalt into lithium battery materials. "The year 2022 will be an important moment for the development of lithium batteries for electric vehicles. In 2024 electric cars produced in Indonesia will use electric batteries and other important components produced in our country, Indonesia," he said when inaugurating the PT Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Indonesia factory and launching the IONIQ 5 electric car, Wednesday (16/3/2022). He said the government would continue to encourage the improvement of the local content of electric vehicles. It is done by providing incentives, cutting various regulatory barriers.

"So the upstream industry of electric vehicles will also grow, which at the same time creates jobs and performs import substitution," added Jokowi. Jokowi stated that the government will always support every investment in electric vehicles in Indonesia. Also about the development of the upstream industry, especially the battery industry. "Like today, Hyundai launched the Hyundai IONIQ 5 electric car. This car is the first electric car made in Indonesia, which is produced to meet the Indonesian market as well as the export market," he explained. "I hope that the Hyundai IONIQ 5 electric car will be an important milestone in the development of electric vehicles in Indonesia, advancing the development of electric cars that are increasingly sophisticated and in demand," Jokowi said.
