KKP Disburses IDR 37.53 Billion for Riau Fisheries Improvement

To accelerate the implementation of the blue economy concept, in 2022 the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) prepares a budget of IDR 37.53 billion to encourage the improvement of the marine and fisheries sector in Riau Province. "Especially for BKIPM, we have received an allocation of 8.1 billion for quality control, fish quarantine and system standardization and compliance," explained Acting BKIPM, Hari Maryadi when receiving a working visit from Commission IV of the Indonesian House of Representatives at the Fish Quarantine, Quality Control and Fishery Product Safety (BKIPM) Pekanbaru office, Monday (7/3). According to Hari, with the support of well-managed facilities and infrastructure and commitment from the KKP, Riau Province has a very strategic potential to reach the Malaysian and Singaporean markets with fishery products such as Vaname Shrimp, White Snapper, Shellfish, and Mangrove Crab.

Highlighting the potential of the marine and fisheries sector in Riau Province, Deputy Chairman of Commission IV DPR RI, Dedi Mulyadi reminded that good management does not mean exploiting fish resources as much as possible without considering sustainability aspects. "Therefore, this working visit aims to see and confirm directly in the field," explained Dedi. According to him, the enormous potential and opportunity will be useless if it is not utilized and managed properly with the support of adequate facilities and infrastructure as well as the commitment of the stakeholders, especially the KKP. Agreeing with Dedi, according to Hari so far the concept of a policy of measured fishing and cultivation with the blue economy concept has become the commitment of all colleagues in the KKP involving various parties including Pekanbaru BKIPM officers. It was recorded that in 2021, BKIPM Pekanbaru issued 1,292 export certificates. In addition, the Pekanbaru BKIPM laboratory has also pocketed a certificate for testing bacteria, viruses, parasites, mycotic to organoleptic standards with SNI ISO 17025:2017. "This means that we have the competence to prevent transmission of harmful bacteria, parasites, or viruses from fishery commodities," said Hari. This is also following the MPA's blue economy concept roadmap in which various programs related to marine spatial planning activities in national waters will balance the ecological and economic aspects. With the Technical Implementation Unit (UPT) the KKP plays an important role as a representation of the presence of the state in the region which is expected to have a positive impact on the welfare of the marine and fishery community.
