Hunted by China, Indonesian Seaweed Exports Reach IDR 2.53 Trillion

Throughout 2021, Indonesia's seaweed exports made a positive performance. The biggest export demand comes from China. Citing the Instagram of the Directorate General of National Export Development of the Indonesian Ministry of Trade, this commodity is predicted to continue to have high demand. The reason is, seaweed is one of the raw materials for processed foods and pharmaceuticals. As evidence, the export value of seaweed during the 10-month 2021 period was recorded to have increased by 20.42% (yoy) with a total value of USD177.99 million or IDR 2.53 trillion (exchange rate of IDR 14,300). "Seeing the magnitude of this potential, it is hoped that Indonesia can optimize exports of seaweed products to various countries around the world," wrote the General for National Export Development of the Ministry of Trade, quoted on Monday (7/3/2022). The type of Indonesian seaweed that dominates the export market is Eucheuma Cottonii which has a portion of 71.59% of the total exports of Indonesian seaweed products. Next, is the type of seaweed Gracilaria sp which is the second largest seaweed export product with a portion of 11.89%.
