JAKARTA - The Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono introduced the policy of measured fishing in front of thousands of participants at the 9th annual World Ocean Summit (WOS) international forum, Tuesday (1/3/2022). Sakti Wahyu Trenggono explained that the implementation of the policy was part of the transformation of governance in the Indonesian marine and fisheries sector by prioritizing the blue economy principle. "Indonesia's fisheries transformation will take off this year. The balance between ecological and economic factors is the main guideline for turning into our country's future fisheries policy," said Minister Sakti when presenting his presentation, quoted Wednesday (2/3/2022). The implementation of a measured fishing policy is one of three main phases in the transformation of fisheries governance in Indonesia.
In this phase, the quota-based fishing policy is accompanied by the economic restructuring of fishermen and fish cultivators. “The next phase of accelerating growth focuses on the blue economy, as well as strengthening that growth. Through these phases, according to him, Indonesia is targeting to become a world-recognized sustainable fisheries manager," he stated. Quota-based fisheries will be our main tool to maintain the marine environment and at the same time promote economic growth. “The implementation of the measured fishing policy is also a manifestation of the implementation of the blue economy principle. Indonesia has a strong commitment to restoring marine health and accelerating a sustainable marine economy," he concluded.
