Cultivating sweet potato are considered to be an easy job for Indonesian farmers. On the other side, the farmers are gaining profits and are able to fix the price at their own rates. This was explained by the Chairman of the Muhammadiyah Tobacco Control Center (MTCC) Universitas Muhammadiyah Magelang (Unimma), Dr. Dra Retno Risdjijati M.Kes, in the Muhammadiyah Independent Farmer School event held by MTCC Unimma offline at SMK Muhammadiyah 2 Mertoyudan, Magelang, Friday (4/2/2022). According to the Chairman of the Indonesian Multicultural Farmers Forum (FPMI)--Istanto, after planting the seed they see the progress in day 10 to add the fertilizer. In the Windusari sub-district, Magelang district several years ago, many tobacco plants were planted. However, recently many have replaced or diversified crops to sweet potato plants. Until now, the area in the Windusari Sub-district which is planted with sweet potatoes is around 315 hectares in an area that has an altitude of about 400 meters above sea level (masl) to 800 meters above sea level which is at the foot of Mount Sumbing Magelang. Above 800 masl, he continued, the plants and production are not good. The first time planting sweet potatoes, continued Istanto, was in October 2013. Previously, it rained quite a lot for 2 years, namely in 2012 and 2013, this affected the quality and price of tobacco. In October 2013 while there were still tobacco plants, Istanto tried to plant sweet potatoes and managed to produce good results. Seeing Istanto's success, not a few people tried it and succeeded. Istanto also said planting sweet potatoes was a 'lazy' activity. This is because after planting, 10 days later the development of the plant will be seen. After adding the fertilizer, it takes 45 days to look at and behind the stems and wait for it to be harvested, so there is no need to come to the sweet potato plantation every day.
