Indonesia's Exports and Imports Increase by Nearly 40% in 2021

The Statistics Indonesia (BPS) noted that the total value of Indonesia's exports and imports over the past year rose by 40 percent. This figure is obtained from a comparison between export and import data in two different years, namely 2020 and 2021.In terms of exports, the value reached US$ 231.54 billion, an increase of 41.88 percent in 2021. In 2020, the total export value only reached US$ 163.19 billion. "Our exports have increased quite sharply when compared to 2020. An increase of 41.88 percent," said Head of BPS Margo Yuwono in a press conference, Monday (17/1). Not only overall, the total value of non-oil and gas exports also increased by 41.52 percent from US$ 154.94 billion in 2020 to US$ 219.27 billion in 2021. "Meanwhile, specifically for our non-oil and gas exports, it was recorded at US$ 219.27 billion. It is much higher than 2020, which is up 41.52 percent. Our export performance this year (2021) is quite encouraging, hopefully, this trend will occur in 2022," he said. Margo revealed that the export of the non-oil and gas sector in the mineral fuel sector and the animal or vegetable fat sector was the highest among the others. "If you look at the share of our non-oil and gas exports, broken down by commodity, the largest share is mineral fuel, which has a share of 14.98 percent. Exports of mineral fuels reached US$ 32.84 billion. Followed by fats and vegetable oils, the share was 14.97 percent or equivalent to US$ 32.83 billion," he said.


In terms of imports, the total value of imports in 2021 increased by 38.59 percent or the equivalent of US$ 196.20 billion. Last year, the total value of imports was only US$ 141.57 billion. Similarly, non-oil and gas imports also increased by 34.05 percent, or equivalent to US$ 170.67 billion last year. Imports of the non-oil and gas sector in the field of machinery or mechanical equipment and parts thereof dominated Indonesia's imports last year. Machinery imports reached US$ 25.85 billion, equivalent to 15.14 percent compared to other fields. Then, followed by imports of machinery or electrical equipment and parts of US$ 22.34 billion. "Electrical machinery or equipment and parts thereof, the share of imports of total non-oil and gas imports reached 13.09 percent or the equivalent of US$ 22.34 billion," he said.
