Indonesia Opens Up Opportunities for Broadband Technology Investment

The Ministry of Communication and Information (Kominfo) stated that there are opportunities for the private sector to invest in broadband technology, in order to accelerate digital transformation. "By 2025 all countries are expected to provide universal broadband policies, affordability of broadband services, encourage everyone to have online access, digital literacy and skills, digital financial services, e-commerce and gender equality in accessing services," said the Director General of Resources. and Postal and Information Technology Equipment, Ismail, during a virtual meeting held by the Indonesia Expo 2020 Dubai Pavilion, in a press release, quoted on Saturday. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has a broadband advocacy target for 2025. The prosperity of a country can be seen from the existence of a broadband network. According to Ismail, the higher the penetration of fixed broadband and mobile broadband in a country, the better the country's ability to mitigate the risk of economic damage due to the COVID-19 pandemic. "Fixed broadband plays a bigger role in developed countries for the return to scale effect and mobile broadband plays a bigger role in developing countries in terms of accessibility," said Ismail.

Indonesia faces three challenges in increasing change in the digital sector, namely connectivity, the digital divide during the pandemic and the expansion of digital infrastructure networks. The implementation of 5G networks in Indonesia is estimated to increase investment by IDR 591 trillion in 2030, increasing to IDR 719 trillion in 2035. The 5G network will also provide an additional 4.6 million job opportunities in 2030 and 5.1 million in 2035. Indonesia, as a developing country and consisting of tens of thousands of islands, requires equitable access to connectivity, especially for household and industrial consumption. The government has made a Digital Indonesia Roadmap 2021-2024 containing an agenda for digital transformation and national economic recovery. In this case, Kominfo provides telecommunications infrastructure and strengthens data governance, including cross-border data exchange. This year, the ministry will focus on increasing access to 4G networks in disadvantaged areas, encouraging the use of infrastructure among telecommunication providers and launching 5G networks. Next year, Kominfo will expand the development of local start-ups, while in 2023 Indonesia wants to become a Southeast Asian financial technology hub. By 2024, digital tourism will be driven for marketing and customer experience needs.
