Electric Battery Investment Value Reaches US$13.5 Billion

The Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment (Kemenkomarves) said that the investment value of batteries for electric vehicles reached US$13.5 billion or equivalent to Rp. 193 trillion (exchange rate of Rp. 14,319 per dollar). "The battery also supports the need for green transportation, such as for the development of electric cars. In total, the investment value has reached US$ 13.5 billion," wrote the Kemenkomarves on the official website, Wednesday (15/12). With a fantastic investment value, the battery capacity that can be manufactured annually reaches 12 million tons. Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Panjaitan said Indonesia was focusing on investing in downstream mineral resources, lithium battery development, environmentally friendly transportation, and new and renewable energy. "Now we are starting to focus on moving towards realizing green energy," said Luhut.

The batteries that will be produced will be sourced from domestic mining commodities such as nickel, bauxite, tin, and copper. These commodities will later be used for purification and product processing to provide added value. The Kemenkomarves said the mineral resources could later be used to produce steel and batteries, both nickel-based and non-nickel-based. In addition to developing environmentally friendly technology, Luhut claimed that Indonesia is also trying to protect the environment by implementing several programs. "We continue to strive to maintain and increase 75 to 80% of the world's carbon credits, including through restoration programs, maintaining deforestation rates, shifting towards the use of new and renewable energy, and committing to build green and blue industrial areas," he explained. Luhut said President Joko Widodo would conduct a groundbreaking for the green industrial park project in North Kalimantan on Thursday (16/12). The area will be used as a pilot for using battery-based electric motorized vehicles (KBLBB).
