Shrimp production in Indonesia is targeted to reach two million tons by 2024. Most of this production will be exported. To achieve this, the Directorate General of Aquaculture (DJPB) of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) encourages a breakthrough program to boost productivity and continuity of shrimp farming in Indonesia. The strategy is to revitalize traditional shrimp ponds to become semi-intensive shrimp ponds. Currently, traditional ponds cover an area of only about 247,803 hectares with a production of between 0.6 tons per hectare per year. "We want to increase at least 20-30 tons per hectare per year with a pond area of 45 thousand hectares," said Director General of Aquaculture, Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) TB Haeru Rahayu in a virtual press conference, Tuesday (7/12).
TB Haeru explained that the potential locations for revitalizing traditional shrimp ponds into semi-intensive shrimp ponds are spread across four provinces. Among them are North Sumatra covering an area of 10 thousand hectares, located in East Aceh, West Aceh, Banyuasin, and South Lampung. Then, Nusa Tenggara covers an area of 2 thousand hectares located in Bima and Dompu. Furthermore, Sulawesi covers an area of 22,500 hectares located in North Gorontalo, Donggala, Wajo, Pinrang, Takalar, Kolaka, North Kolaka, and Polewali Mandar. In addition, Kalimantan covers an area of 10,500 hectares located in Tanah Tumbu, Tanah Laut, Kutai Kartanegara, and Tana Tidung. In addition to revitalizing shrimp ponds, to increase productivity, KKP also uses a modern shrimp pond modeling strategy with a production target of 80 tons per hectare per year. The potential locations for modeling shrimp ponds are spread across five provinces, namely Sumatra with an area of 4 thousand hectares, and Kalimantan with an area of 2 thousand hectares. Also, West Nusa Tenggara is 1,000 hectares, the Maluku Islands is 1,000 hectares and Sulawesi is 6 thousand hectares. "We are optimistic that this can be achieved, because we do the management from upstream to downstream," he said.
Meanwhile, the construction of a modern area-based shrimp pond will also start in 2022 in Kebumen Regency, Central Java Province. The modeling concept of a modern shrimp pond is made with a land area of up to 1,000 hectares, which will be built as a pilot in Kebumen Regency with a land area of 100 hectares. This model has a management system from upstream to downstream, so it can reduce production costs and through the application of technology can increase productivity. For information, shrimp is one of the prima donna of Indonesian exports. The KKP reported that the volume of fishery exports reached 1.26 billion kilograms (kg) with a value of US$ 5.2 billion in 2020. Shrimp is the largest export commodity with a volume of 239.28 million kg and a value of US$ 2.04 billion. Shrimp export volume increased by 28.96% compared to 2019 which was 207.70 million kg. Shrimp also contributed to the total export volume of fishery products by 18.95% last year. Production of shrimp farming in Indonesia reached 911.2 thousand tons in 2020. Of that amount, as many as 157.4 thousand tons of shrimp farming production is in West Java as well as the largest nationally. West Nusa Tenggara is in second place with shrimp culture production of 143.17 thousand tons.
