The government through the Ministry of Investment/Investment Coordinating Agency (BKPM) said it would focus on targeting downstream as a priority investment sector to pursue the investment target in 2022 of IDR 1,200 trillion. Investment Minister/Head of BKPM Bahlil Lahadalia in an online press conference in Jakarta, Wednesday, said that the economy's contribution will not be able to shift more to investment if good downstreaming is not built. "In 2022, the most priority is that we encourage downstreaming. The key is downstreaming with a green energy and green industry approach. This will be the focus," he said.
Bahlil emphasized that he did not want any party or person to hinder this. He acknowledged that there were parties who did not want Indonesia to downstream its natural mineral resources. In fact, according to him, downstreaming of coal or nickel will be in line with President Jokowi's vision of economic transformation so that the added value can be enjoyed domestically. "This is not an easy thing. I know that some are playing games not to want this process to happen, including the car battery ecosystem. They want Indonesia to only export raw goods," he said. Bahlil said Indonesia had discussed plans to acquire electric cars on a business-to-business basis. The government has also signed a cooperation to build a low-calorie coal processing facility which will produce dimethyl ether (DME) which can substitute for imported LPG. "To anyone, whether it's businessmen or officials or individuals in SOEs, who don't agree with the big thoughts about this economic transformation, I hope you step aside. Because Indonesia must progress. It's enough that our country has been toyed with, that's enough. We must rise together. As far as DME is concerned, some have tried to get in the way. We never hesitate to move forward," said Bahlil.
