Indonesian Minister of Trade Muhammad Lutfi said Indonesia is ready to become a promising digital market in Southeast Asia because it has inclusive and sustainable digital economic growth. "Indonesia is ready to become the most promising digital market in Southeast Asia. This is supported by continuous efforts from various industrial sectors in Southeast Asia Indonesia to enable inclusive and sustainable economic growth," said Minister Lutfi, quoted from a press statement on Saturday. The Trade Minister said, with abundant resources, talent, and technological strength, Indonesia is rapidly becoming an important part of the global supply chain. In the trade sector, Indonesia is strengthening its capability to produce various important commodities, such as steel, nickel and copper. Indonesia is also increasing its efforts to digitize and empower small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the country, so that they can contribute more to national exports. Second, Indonesia's ongoing efforts to grow the digital ecosystem are also in line with the nation's vision of building a circular economy system.
By 2045, Indonesia aims to become a developed country with an economic system that maintains the maximum value of products, raw materials and resources. Trade Minister Lutfi believes that Indonesia will become a promising market for foreign investment with the government's continued efforts to accelerate trade and tourism as well as the exponential growth of Indonesia's digital and circular economy. "The Covid-19 pandemic has forced millions of Indonesians to shift their communication and social activities to the online realm, and we have witnessed the rapid growth of the digital economy," he said. He continued, since 2015, Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) in the digital economy has grown by more than 40 percent every year. This growth trend has intensified after the pandemic to 42 percent in April 2020.
"These figures show that Indonesia is emerging as the most promising digital market in Southeast Asia by at least 2025," he added. Based on this figure, Trade Minister Lutfi explained, GMV in the digital economy in Indonesia is projected to reach 130 billion US dollars. This growth rate is above other countries in Southeast Asia. In addition, Trade Minister Lutfi said that the current development of Indonesia's digital economy cannot be separated from the nation's growth enablers, such as PT Applications Karya Anak Bangsa (GoTo) and PT Telekomunikasi Selular (Telkomsel).
