Capturing the Potential of the Halal Industry in the Country

Taking advantage of the momentum of the rapid development of the Islamic economy and finance, the Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) continues to encourage the empowerment of the halal industry in the country. One of them is by holding an event entitled Indonesia Halal Industry Award 2021. "Through these activities, we are trying to gather halal industry players from various sectors, be it food and beverages, cosmetics, to textiles. The industry players we embrace consist of the community, academics, Small and Medium Industries (IKM), companies, to government ," said the Secretary General (Secretary General) of the Ministry of Industry, Dody Widodo in Jakarta, Wednesday (3/11). Dody said that the Ministry of Industry had socialized the 2021 Indonesia Halal Industry Award in several industrial base cities such as Surabaya, Makassar and Tangerang. Through these efforts, it is hoped that many industry players will participate in this award event. In addition to aiming to give appreciation to those who have struggled to develop the halal industry, through the 2021 Indonesia Halal Industry Award, the Ministry of Industry can measure the strength of the domestic halal industry. Both in terms of supply chain management of halal raw materials (halal value chain), innovation, financing, to packaging and logistics delivery.

"From the socialization carried out in several cities by the Center for Halal Industry Empowerment (PPIH) of the Ministry of Industry, it has succeeded in capturing more than 100 participants from various circles and various business sectors," said Dody. The Ministry of Industry highly appreciates the industry players who participated in this activity. The Ministry hopes that through this event, the ability of the halal industry will be more measurable and support the direction of developing the halal industry in the future. In order to encourage the huge potential of the halal industry, collaboration is needed in strengthening the halal industry ecosystem. He said, several categories in the 2021 Indonesia Halal Industry Awards were an illustration of the strategy to support the national Sharia economic vision, namely to make Indonesia independent, prosperous and civil by becoming the world's leading Islamic economic center. This is as stated in the Indonesian Islamic Economic Masterplan 2019 to 2024.
“There are four main strategies that become a reference for stakeholders. This includes strengthening the halal value chain, strengthening Islamic finance, strengthening micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and strengthening the digital economy," he said. The Head of the Center for Halal Industry Empowerment (PPIH) at the Ministry of Industry, Juniadi Marki, said that the 2021 Indonesia Halal Industry Awards will become an annual agenda at the Ministry of Industry. The judging in this activity involves stakeholders from various circles, from government institutions, non-government, industry, associations, community organizations, and academia, starting from the stage of compiling categories and assessment indicators; until the judging and determination of the winner later. "This is in order to strengthen synergy and collaboration among halal stakeholders, so that the activities of the 2021 Indonesia Halal Industry Awards are not seen as belonging to the Ministry of Industry alone, but also to all parties," he explained. He added that the socialization activities that have been carried out in several cities have also produced good ideas for the growth of the halal industry in the country.
Play a more active role

IPB University's Islamic Economic Observer Irfan Syauqi Beik assessed that the potential of the Indonesian halal industry was considered very large. So, Indonesia needs to play a more active role. "Domestically, local halal producers must be able to host in their own country. For example, Wardah is very successful in the cosmetic industry," he told Republika.co.id. Internationally, he continued, Indonesia must encourage various national halal products to penetrate the international market. That way, this country can enjoy the existing global cake. He mentioned, there are several halal sectors that need to be utilized and optimized. These include the halal food industry, the halal tourism industry, the Muslim fashion industry and halal cosmetics. "I see that in the three sectors, Indonesia has the capacity to compete internationally," said Irfan. The potential of the halal industry is supported by the world's Muslim population in 2030 which is projected to reach 2.2 billion people or 26.5 percent of the world's population. This encourages the huge potential of the global halal market.

Data from the State of the Global Islamic Economy Report 2020-2021 shows that the market size of the Islamic economy in the halal industry reached US$2.2 trillion in 2019 for food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, fashion, tourism, and other needs. This data increased 3.2 percent compared to the previous year. Based on the Global Islamic Economy Indicator (GIEI), Indonesia's Islamic economic ranking rose from fifth to fourth, after Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The GIEI indicator shows that Indonesia is in the top position as a consumer of halal food, second in terms of halal cosmetics, and fourth in the world's consumer of halal medicines. For the domestic market, in 2017 the demand for halal products in Indonesia has reached 218.8 billion US dollars or about 22 percent of Indonesia's total GDP. This consumption is expected to continue to grow in line with the growth of Indonesia's Muslim population.
