A total of six products that won Good Design Indonesia (GDI) 2021 again won the Good Design Award (GDA) or G-Mark, an international design award event organized by the Japan Institute of Design Promotion (JDP). This achievement was announced through the official JDP website on Wednesday (20/10). “By winning this award, it is proof that Indonesian products are able to compete in the global market. Hopefully this award can be a driving force in moving the trade sector back,” said Director General of National Export Development (PEN) Didi Sumedi. Through collaboration between the Directorate General of National Export Development, Ministry of Trade and JDP, GDI is now directly connected to GDA. In other words, GDI is an initial screening for participants to take part in GDA apart from the independent pathway. This year, the Directorate General of National Export Development facilitated 20 GDI products to participate in the 2nd Screening of GDA on 17-19 August 2021 at the Aichi Sky Expo Japan. As a result, six successful products won awards, namely Kubiko, Poreblock, Mukura BYOND, Rekajalin, Jukung, and Cakra Selaras Wahana.
One of the products that won the G-Mark award is Kubiko, a luggage product from PT Continental Panjipratama. This product is inspired by the mobile lifestyle of travelers who demand to stay productive, even when traveling. Another product is Poreblock, which is porous concrete in the form of paving blocks that can absorb water from Kanggo Nusantara Bagja Technology. Utilizing coal waste and having an infiltration rate of 100 times faster than conventional paving blocks, this porous concrete has the strength that trucks weighing 8 tons can pass. Next, Mukura BYOND from PT Mujur Kurnia Ampuh, a roster that functions as a vent for ventilation and natural lighting in the building. Made from ceramic granite, this product is 75 percent lighter than brick and concrete rosters. Then, Rekajalin is woven from PT Berkat Kriya Tritunggal. Inspired by the temple relief ornaments and the woven patterns of the Dayak tribe, the Holographic Byoliving weaving technique was created. This wicker uses quality rattan from the vast forests of Kalimantan and was specially selected as a material for the pride of the nation.
Next, Jukung from Karya Dua Anyam. A simple modern box-shaped container that offers easy storage and an aesthetically pleasing decoration. Inspired by the shape of the boat belonging to the women weavers of South Kalimantan, the work of designers Eugenio Hendro and Du Anyam is handmade using a flexible and natural purun material. Lastly, Cakra Selaras Wahana, the first elevated building in Indonesia that functions to integrate Jakarta's Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) with Transjakarta Corridors I, XIII, and the Integrated Border Transport Busway (APTB). Standing on a limited road segment, this building is an accessibility solution for the corridor XIII bus stop which has not been able to operate because it is located at an altitude of about 23 meters above the road.
This award, continued Didi, is expected to be a wider opening for Indonesian products to enter the global market. "Hopefully next year, there will be more Indonesian products that won the G-Mark with the hope that Indonesian products will more easily enter the global market, especially Japan," concluded Didi.
Good Design Indonesia 2021 at a Glance
GDI is a design award on a national scale to Indonesian designers and business actors who create creative and innovative product designs, and have high commercial value in the global market. In addition to encouraging the development of the national industrial design sector, the implementation of GDI also aims to improve the performance of Indonesia's non-oil and gas exports through the creation of value-added and highly competitive products. This year, GDI opened 20 categories and recorded as many as 427 registrants who entered the registration. The first stage of judging will be held in a hybrid manner on 5-6 May 2021 with a digital method where all product documents, jury assessment forms, and recapitulation forms for the committee can be accessed through the GDI website and 296 products passed in the second stage.
Furthermore, the second stage of judging will be held on 7, 8, and 10 June 2021 by involving 11 judges from various backgrounds. Based on the judging results, it was decided that 20 products won the GDI Best award and 32 products won the GDI award.
