Jokowi: Indonesia is in the Seven Largest Copper Reserve Countries in the World

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) said that Indonesia has very large copper reserves which are in the top seven in the world. “Our country, Indonesia, has very large, very large copper reserves, which are included in the category of seven countries that have the largest copper reserves in the world. This is what many of us don't know," said Jokowi at the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the PT Freeport Indonesia Special Economic Zone (SEZ) Gresik, East Java, Tuesday (12/10/2021).
This enormous potential, Jokowi continued, must be utilized as well as possible for the prosperity of the people by creating added value for the national economy. “Don't let us own the mine, we have the concentrate, the smelter, the downstream is in another country. As the Minister did not say, they are in Spain, they are in Japan, the added value means those who enjoy them," said Jokowi. This is the reason the PT Freeport smelter was built domestically, namely in Gresik, East Java. This is a strategic policy related to the copper mining industry after the government controlled 51% of Freeport's shares. “At that time, we encouraged Freeport to build a domestic smelter. Because once again, we want the added value to be here," said Jokowi.
