The Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) revealed that the government is preparing a roadmap for the halal industry. This is done to encourage the optimization of the potential and opportunities for the development of the halal industry in the country. The reason is, Indonesia is a country with the largest Muslim population in the world with 272.2 million people. Meanwhile, in the scope of the global sharia economy, Indonesia is in the 4th position, or below Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. "In realizing a halal ecosystem, the Ministry of Industry has issued two related Regulations of the Minister of Industry. First, regarding the Halal Industrial Zone, then regarding the establishment of the Halal Industry Empowerment Center," said Secretary General of the Ministry of Industry Dody Widodo in a press release received quoted by Kompas.com, Tuesday (12/10/2021).
Dody explained, to produce halal products, many aspects are of concern, such as raw materials, supporting technology, supporting facilities, and human resources (HR) of the industries involved. He also assessed that with the potential of the global sharia economy which reached 2.02 trillion US dollars, Indonesia has a very good opportunity to develop the halal industry, especially in the food and beverage, fashion, pharmaceutical and cosmetic sectors. "This can be seen from the increasing demand for halal food products as well as the development of Muslim fashion trends which must be utilized by the national Textile and Textile Product (TPT) Industry through a variety of product innovations and optimization of functional textiles," explained Dody.
Meanwhile, in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries, the development of halal products is also in line with efforts to substitute imported raw materials, because they can take advantage of Indonesia's unique biodiversity as a separate selling point in the eyes of global consumers. To accelerate the development of the halal ecosystem in Indonesia, the Ministry of Industry together with relevant ministries or institutions, including the National Sharia Economic Committee (KNEKS), the Ministry of Finance, and the Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas, are currently compiling a roadmap for the halal industry.
"This is expected to accelerate the formation of a halal ecosystem from an industrial aspect," said Dody. In addition, the Ministry of Industry is increasingly proactive in supporting the empowerment of the national halal industry which is manifested in several main programs, including the development of human resources for the halal industry, development of the production process, facilitation of halal infrastructure development, as well as publications and promotions, especially those related to the national halal industry which is manifested in several major programs. "This also includes support for small and medium-sized industries (IKM) which have so far received halal certification facilities," said Dody.
