Minister of Trade (Mendag) Muhammad Lutfi said, Indonesia has the potential to become a superpower country in the world in carbon trading. "Indonesia has the potential to become a carbon offset superpower in the world through international voluntary carbon trading," he said in his statement, Friday (10/8/2021). Therefore, according to him, international cooperation is needed to encourage collaboration between the government and the private sector in the context of developing an effective policy regulatory framework.
He who attended the meeting of the Council of Ministers of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in Paris, France, explicitly stated his commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions as stated in the Paris Agreement. One of the efforts that can be done is through a carbon pricing policy. "To achieve economic recovery efforts combined with achieving the net zero emission target, of course, requires international cooperation," he said.
Also discussed in the Building a Green Future session of the meeting was the effort to push the economic recovery agenda which is now packaged to support the transition agenda towards a green economy, innovation, and new economic opportunities for workers. Lutfi also hopes that the provisions that have the potential to become negotiating issues can be agreed pragmatically and collaboratively. In between the series of meetings of the OECD Council of Ministers, Lutfi also held bilateral meetings with friendly countries, namely Kazakhstan, France, the United States, Canada, Spain, the European Union, and also with the Director General of the WTO Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.
