Airlangga Hartarto: Economic Growth Can Be Maintained in Q3

Indonesia is expecting to maintain the economic growth in Q3 this year as in the second quarter, the economy grew by 7.07 percent. According to Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, Covid-19 management control and social protection are the two main roles to help maintain the growth in Q3.

"We reached 7.07% in April, May and June, this can be done since the Covid cases could be suppressed at 100,000. So the economic activities resumed, [and] there has been an increase in mobility," said the minister in an event with Tempo on Wednesday, August 18.
However, due to the spike of Covid-19 cases in the third quarter, the government is implementing strict Covid-19 management control in order to maintain the economic growth.
“Well, of course the economy will continue to grow, considering the implementation of PPKM levels 4 and 3, and [people's] discipline in wearing masks, then the improved testing and tracing,” said Airlangga. He added that the government’s attempt in controlling Covid-19 cases in Indonesia is by intensifying the vaccination.
Another key to maintain the economic growth in next quarter, according to Airlangga Hartarto, is through the social protection programs, including family hope program, staple food card, cash subsidy assistance, pre-employment card, internet quota, electricity subsidy, wage subsidy assistance, and others.
“The economy, and of course the social protection, are also the key because it become the buffer for people's purchasing power."
Indonesia, said Airlangga, has set 186.64 trillion for social protection programs with the realization of 97.1 trillion or 52 percent.
