The First Electric Vehicle Battery Raw Material Factory in Indonesia Officially Operates

The first electric vehicle battery raw material factory in Indonesia that produces a mixture of solid hydroxides from nickel and cobalt (Mixed Hydroxide Precipitate - MHP) is officially in production in Kawasi, Obi, South Halmahera, North Maluku.

The nickel refining process using the HPAL hydrometallurgical process has an MHP production capacity of 365 thousand tons per year, and is the basic raw material for environmentally friendly electric vehicle batteries.

Harita Group which manages the Obi Island Industrial Estate is a National Strategic Project (PSN), and through Halmahera Persada Lygend has entered the MHP production phase.

MHP is an intermediate product of the processing and refining of low grade nickel before further processing into nickel sulfate and cobalt sulfate.

Currently Harita is also developing advanced production facilities to produce nickel sulfate and cobalt sulfate, which are the main materials for electric vehicle batteries.

"Halmahera Persada Lygend is a low grade nickel ore (Limonite) processing and refining facility with hydrometallurgy technology known as High Pressure Acid Leach (HPAL). Construction of HPAL started in August 2018 and is ready for commercial production. This is the first HPAL plant in Indonesia, "explained the President Commissioner of Halmahera Persada Lygend, Stevi Thomas, and his statement on Wednesday (23/6/2021).

The inauguration of factory operations was carried out by the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, accompanied by Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian, Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi, Minister of Investment/Head of Investment Agency Bahlil Lahadalia, Minister of Agrarian and Spatial Planning Sofyan Djalil, Governor of North Maluku KH. Abdul Gani Kasuba, South Halmahera Regent Usman Sidik, and a number of other officials.

"We are very proud because we are all witnesses to the history of the establishment of HPAL in Indonesia. Indonesia can prove itself capable. This will be the development of downstreaming going forward and supporting the electric vehicle industry. The government will support the development of HPAL in Indonesia. ideals in an effort to reduce emission levels from the use of fossil fuel vehicles," said Stevi.

Nickel refining using HPAL hydrometallurgical technology is said to produce very useful products in an effort to reduce emissions, and support mineral conservation, especially nickel.

HPAL technology is able to process low grade nickel which has not been processed so far. Now the low grade nickel material in Indonesia has added value and has become a very strategic product.

"We must support this industry together. Halmahera Persada Lygend is the first factory for electric vehicle battery raw materials in Indonesia and will later appear in other regions. No less important, this industry will absorb more than 20 thousand workers later. Regional development will be faster "This is a national asset. We must protect it. But the environment must also be protected," said Luhut.

The Regent of South Halmahera, Usman Sidik, said that the available resources and the development of the nickel industry in Halsel will help regional development. Usman hopes that the development of this industry will be driven by the acceleration of development and development of other industries, not only nickel.
