Indonesia Elected as FAO Council Member for 2021-2024

Indonesia was recently elected as a member of the Food and Agriculture Organization Council for the 2021-2024 term.
Indonesia will represent the Asia regional group alongside Bangladesh, Philippines, Japan, China, and South Korea. According to Agriculture Minister Syahrul Yasin Limpo, the appointment illustrates FAO’s acknowledgement of Indonesia’s agricultural sector.
“The FAO sees our agriculture has been growing tremendously. Indonesia’s agricultural sector has contributed and maintained a positive economic growth, “ Syahrul said in a statement over the weekend.

As a FAO council member, Indonesia can play an active role in bolstering 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and transformation to a sustainable agriculture system. As well as a technical cooperation via the Hand-in-Hand Initiative (HIHI), in synergy with Indonesia via the South-South and Triangular Cooperations, according to the Agricultural Ministry statement.

Indonesia’s appointment took place at the virtual 42nd FAO Conference on June 14-18. Speaking at the general debate, Syahrul highlighted the importance of continuous efforts to transform towards an inclusive, resilient, and sustainable agri-food system.
In its transformation, Indonesia’s agricultural sector has always put forward local-oriented, collaborative, transformative, resilient, and sustainable principles, Syahrul said.

“Indonesia is committed to work alongside FAO and its members, including via the South-South and Triangular cooperations,” the minister said.
“The strengthening of collaboration plays a vital role in curbing the Covid-19 impact to the food system and agriculture.”
