Indonesia Hoping Halal Sector to Help Economy Recover

Indonesian official said that halal sector was one of economy's drivers towards a positive path in the second quarter of 2021. The Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs' acting deputy for commerce and industry coordination, Susiwijono Moegiarso, said that the economic growth is predicted to stay on a positive path in the third quarter.

"One of the sectors expected to make a significant contribution to economic recovery is the halal sector," he said in Jakarta, Friday, June 4.
He said that as a country with the largest Muslim population, Indonesia has huge potential for developing the halal sector.

The total consumption of halal products in 2025 is estimated to reach US$218.8 billion, or growing by an average of 5.3 percent per year.
Bank Indonesia's Sharia Economic and Financial Report shows that the halal sector has been quite resilient against the pandemic. When the national economy was contracted by 2.1 percent, the halal sector only recorded a correction of 1.7 percent.
Meanwhile, the State of the Global Islamic Economy Report 2020-2021 ranked Indonesia's Islamic economic indicators at number 4 in the world, up one position from last year's.

Therefore, Susiwijono said the Government had issued PP No.39/2021 on the Implementation of Halal Product Guarantees, which is part of the implementation of Law 11/2020 on Job Creation.
"The rule is expected to provide convenience and certainty for all business actors to obtain halal certification," he said.
