Italian oil and gas company, Eni, has announced a significant gas discovery with an estimated potential of 5 trillion cubic feet (TCF) in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. The gas find comes from the exploration well Geng North-1 drilled in the North Ganal Production Sharing Contract (PSC), located 85 kilometers off East Kalimantan, Indonesia. The well was drilled to a depth of 3,400 meters MD in water depths of 1,592 meters and encountered gas-bearing sands over 15 meters in two different Miocene levels.
This discovery is seen as good news for the East Kalimantan Province, as it has the potential to boost local revenue and address issues related to poverty and development disparities. Acting Governor of East Kalimantan Province, Akmal Malik, welcomed the discovery as a breath of fresh air for the region. Eni also has plans to increase gas and LNG production from the well, targeting to cover 60 percent of their portfolio by 2030, which is expected to have a positive impact on the economic prospects of East Kalimantan.
