Indonesia Expands Seafood Export Access to Taiwan and South Korea

Indonesia’s Ministry of Fisheries is intensifying efforts to expand seafood exports worldwide, including gaining broader market access in Taiwan and South Korea, to strengthen trade and increase foreign exchange earnings. A growing number of Indonesian seafood processing companies have secured approval from Taiwanese and South Korean authorities, enabling them to export products to those markets. According to Ishartini, head of the Quality Control Agency, 33 additional processing units were recently granted export certification, bringing the total number of Indonesian processors eligible to export to South Korea to 710 and to Taiwan to 711. The expanded approval is expected to boost export performance, especially to meet demand ahead of the 2026 Lunar New Year, with Indonesia showing steady growth in seafood exports to both destinations in 2025.

In 2025, Indonesia shipped 26,107 tons of seafood to South Korea, valued at about USD 87.3 million, and 57,308 tons to Taiwan, worth approximately USD 106.3 million. Key export products to South Korea include shrimp cracker pellets, dried seaweed, frozen surimi, and red shrimp, while Taiwan’s imports feature live shellfish, frozen squid, and tilapia belly meat. Approval numbers are issued by the importing countries’ authorities only after rigorous inspections of sanitation, hygiene, and food safety standards at processing facilities, ensuring Indonesian seafood meets internationally accepted quality benchmarks. With broader recognition of its processing units, Indonesia expects its seafood exports to become more competitive and contribute more significantly to national revenue.
