The Buton Islands achieved a significant milestone in regional economic development as Baubau’s Murhum Port officially became the starting point for direct seafood exports to China on 28 January 2026. For the first time, fisheries commodities—specifically jellyfish—were shipped straight from Southeast Sulawesi without passing through other regions. The inaugural export, carried out by PT Triko Bina Nusantara, involved 15 tons of jellyfish valued at approximately IDR 300 million. This achievement reflects growing international demand and signals strong potential for sustainable export expansion from the region.
Local authorities emphasized that direct exports are crucial to ensuring Southeast Sulawesi fully captures the economic benefits of its natural resources. Previously, many commodities were exported via other provinces, limiting local economic impact and official export records. Through cross-regional coordination involving business associations, customs, port operators, quarantine agencies, and other stakeholders, the provincial government has strengthened export readiness and logistics efficiency. These efforts have already delivered tangible results, with Southeast Sulawesi receiving national recognition for outstanding performance in first-time export value in 2025. The success of this inaugural shipment is expected to inspire more local businesses to engage in export activities and position Southeast Sulawesi as a competitive player in Indonesia’s export supply chain driven by local potential.
