Murhum Port in Baubau City marked a major milestone for regional economic development with the first-ever export of jellyfish from the Buton Islands to China on 28 January 2026. The seafood product was shipped directly from Baubau by PT Triko Bina Nusantara without transiting through other ports outside the region, signaling a new chapter for Southeast Sulawesi’s direct participation in global trade. In the initial phase, four containers of jellyfish were exported with a total value of IDR 1.6 billion, and shipments are planned to continue on a sustainable basis in response to strong international demand, particularly from China.
The export activity in Baubau is part of a broader, integrated export strategy across Southeast Sulawesi. At the same time, Kendari’s Bungkutoko Port released 47 containers of various commodities valued at IDR 500 billion, reflecting consistent export growth from upstream to downstream. Local leaders highlighted that direct exports provide stronger market certainty and greater economic benefits for producers and fishermen, especially considering the region’s jellyfish potential of up to 3,000 tons per year. Building on this achievement, the Baubau city government is preparing additional fisheries and food commodities—such as premium-grade fresh tuna, lobster, seaweed, and cassava—to become the next priority exports, strengthening the region’s role as a competitive and independent export hub.
