Indonesia Begins Construction of 1,500 Fishing Vessels to Strengthen Maritime Fleet

The Indonesian government, through the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, has officially launched an ambitious project to build 1,582 fishing vessels in 2026. The project focuses on producing 30 Gross Ton (GT) capacity ships that will be distributed to various "Red and White" Fishermen's Villages across the Indonesian archipelago. The entire production process is being carried out domestically to empower the local shipbuilding industry and create numerous job opportunities for the community. This initiative is part of the government's strategic effort to optimize Indonesia's abundant marine resources as a global food hub.

For industry stakeholders and fishermen, the presence of this modern fleet is expected to expand their fishing reach to the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). In addition to providing ships, the government is committed to enhancing crew competence in electronic navigation and international maritime safety standards to maximize catch yields. This major project has even attracted investment interest from the British government, which is ready to provide funding and technological support for fisheries development. Through global synergy and strengthening the local fleet, Indonesia is optimistic about increasing fishery export volumes and improving the economic welfare of fishermen in 2026.
