The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) has officially commenced a strategic project to build 1,582 fishing vessels starting in 2026 to optimize Indonesia's vast marine potential. Among these, 1,000 units are 30 Gross Ton (GT) capacity vessels destined for various "Red and White" Fishermen's Villages across the archipelago. The entire production process is guaranteed to utilize domestic materials and labor to foster the independence of the national shipbuilding industry. This grand initiative is expected to reshape Indonesia's maritime economic landscape and solidify the nation's position as a global seafood hub.
The provision of modern 30 GT vessels is projected to significantly boost fishermen's income by enabling them to operate in further reaches, including the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Beyond fleet expansion, the government is also focusing on equipping fishermen with electronic navigation skills and international safety standards to compete on a global scale. The project has even secured investment support from the UK Government following a bilateral meeting between President Prabowo Subianto and Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Through this synergy, Indonesia's fisheries sector is expected to become a sustainable economic driver that improves the welfare of coastal communities in the years ahead.
