The Indonesian government is strengthening its commitment to developing modern, homegrown medicines derived from bioactive compounds found in herbal plants. The Ministry of Industry highlighted that Indonesia’s long-standing herbal medicine tradition holds strong potential to evolve into globally competitive modern pharmaceuticals. Bioactive-based medicines are viewed as a strategic pathway to transform natural resources into high-value health products, while preserving Indonesia’s rich medicinal heritage and aligning it with modern scientific standards.
The government is currently encouraging the standardization of herbal medicines and prioritizing research into bioactive ingredients such as flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, and antioxidants, which have demonstrated potential in treating serious diseases. While herbal remedies are still largely used as complementary treatments, officials see this as an opportunity to accelerate innovation and reduce dependency on imported pharmaceutical chemicals, which currently account for around 90% of raw materials. Through stronger collaboration between government, parliament, and industry players, Indonesia aims to build a more independent, resilient, and competitive pharmaceutical sector based on its abundant natural resources.
