The Provincial Government of Papua, through the Office of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (DKP), has officially designated the Red and White Fishermen's Village (Kampung Nelayan Merah Putih) as an integrated center for marketing, storage, and fish distribution. This initiative aims to strengthen the fisheries sector's economic chain from upstream to downstream while fostering self-sufficiency among coastal communities in the region. With the majority of the population working as fishermen, the transformation of this area into a modern economic node is expected to streamline fish trading activities in a more organized and sustainable manner.
For association members and industry stakeholders, this development offers significant opportunities to strengthen logistics infrastructure and the cold chain in Eastern Indonesia. The area is now equipped with various supporting facilities, ranging from loading and unloading docks and fisherman-specific fuel stations (SPBUN) to culinary centers. In addition to increasing the value of catches, the Red and White Fishermen's Village concept is designed to unlock coastal tourism potential. Through a more robust distribution system, this program is expected to expand inclusive economic benefits for Papuan fishermen and ensure the availability of high-quality fish stocks for broader markets in 2026.
