The Indonesian Ministry of Villages and Development of Disadvantaged Regions (Kemendes PDT) is promoting e-sports as a new driver for village economies, leveraging the digital skills and gaming interests of younger generations. Minister Yandri Susanto highlighted that events like the Mendes PDT Cup E-Sports, held in Boyolali Regency, serve to identify talent and provide productive opportunities for village youth, while potentially redirecting online gaming funds—estimated at IDR 30 trillion flowing abroad—into domestic economic growth.
The ministry plans to develop e-sports into a sustainable ecosystem, creating business opportunities from tournaments, coaching, and digital creative ventures. The Mendes PDT Cup is intended to become an annual event with a tiered competition system, starting at the provincial level and culminating in a national championship. This initiative aims to foster economic development in rural areas while nurturing digital skills and productive engagement for Generation Z.
