Indonesia has officially announced its intention to seek a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2029–2030 term, reaffirming its strong commitment to multilateralism and global cooperation. Foreign Affairs Minister Sugiono stated that the bid reflects Indonesia’s belief in the importance of effective international institutions and its dedication to strengthening and reforming the United Nations so it remains relevant amid evolving geopolitical, economic, and security challenges.
Marking the UN’s 80th anniversary, Indonesia is actively supporting reform initiatives aimed at making the organization more responsive, efficient, and results-oriented. The government emphasized that the candidacy is driven not by prestige, but by a desire to contribute constructively to maintaining the UNSC’s effectiveness under increasing global pressures. Drawing on its experience from four previous non-permanent terms and its presidency of the UNSC in 2020, Indonesia plans to soon launch its diplomatic campaign by engaging with fellow UN member states to gain broad international support.
