Indonesia’s Minister of Agriculture, Andi Amran Sulaiman, expressed strong confidence that the country will be able to export rice in 2026, marking a historic milestone for the national agriculture sector. He noted that rice exports are highly achievable as long as the State Logistics Agency (Bulog) maintains rice absorption levels comparable to those in 2025. Indonesia’s rice production in 2025 reached the equivalent of 34 million tons, while the latest projection for 2026 has been revised upward to 34.77 million tons, reflecting stronger-than-expected performance and reinforcing optimism for export readiness.
Beyond rice, the government is also optimistic about achieving self-sufficiency in refined white sugar in 2026, supported by large-scale sugarcane plantation projects in East Java and a comprehensive replanting program led by PT Sinergi Gula Nusantara with an investment of IDR 9.95 trillion. The initiative is expected to create around 1.6 million jobs and strengthen downstream agro-industry development. Amran highlighted that the success of Indonesia’s food self-sufficiency agenda is the result of close cross-ministerial collaboration, firm governance in fertilizer distribution, and decisive enforcement actions. With an agricultural budget allocation of approximately IDR 40 trillion, the highest on record, Indonesia has seen agricultural exports reach IDR 629 trillion while imports declined to IDR 321 trillion, with exports rising by 33%. These achievements underscore Indonesia’s growing competitiveness and resilience in the global agricultural market.
