Indonesia Coffee Report: Robusta Booming as Demand Builds

Indonesia’s coffee production is projected to rise to 12.5 million 60-kilogram bags in the 2025/26 market year (April–March), an 18% increase compared with the previous year, according to the latest semi-annual report from the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS). This growth is driven largely by a rebound in robusta coffee output after severe weather impacted crops in 2023/24. Improved rainfall, better pruning practices, and increased farm inputs helped robusta yields recover, especially in southern Sumatra regions like Lampung, Bengkulu, and South Sumatra, where robusta now accounts for roughly 11 million bags of the forecasted total production. Indonesia remains a major global producer—about 5% of total world coffee supply—and is the second largest supplier of robusta to Europe, with around 85% of shipments to that region being robusta beans.

Export forecasts are also rising: green coffee exports are expected to reach 7.8 million bags, up 27% from the prior year, supported by strong global demand and a weaker Indonesian rupiah. Shipments from April through August 2025 were already significantly higher year-on-year. While the United States remains a top buyer, its share dipped due to past reciprocal tariffs—now waived—while other markets like Egypt, Belgium, Malaysia, Vietnam, Russia, Japan, and Germany together take about two-thirds of Indonesian coffee exports. Domestically, consumption is expected to hold around 4.81 million bags, with consumers shifting toward cheaper blends as prices rise. Ending stocks are forecast to climb modestly but remain relatively low compared with historical levels.
