Indonesia Plans to Export Corn This Year

The Indonesian government has stated that the country has the potential to export corn in 2026, as domestic production is now sufficient to meet national demand. According to the latest data from Indonesia’s Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the production of dry shelled corn with 14% moisture content in 2025 reached 16.11 million tons, while consumption needs for the same period were 15.64 million tons, resulting in a surplus of about 470,000 tons. In the National Food Balance projection prepared by Bapanas (the National Food Agency) together with relevant ministries and agencies, carry-over stock from 2025 into 2026 is expected to reach 4.5 million tons, equal to nearly three months of national needs with average monthly consumption at around 1.4 million tons. The Deputy for Food Availability and Stabilization at Bapanas, I Gusti Ketut Astawa, said this data indicates that Indonesia achieved corn self-sufficiency in 2025, and therefore the government agreed that corn imports would not be necessary in 2026 for feed, seed, or household consumption. Furthermore, national corn production this year is forecast to increase to approximately 18 million tons, and stocks by the end of 2026 are expected to remain at around 4.5 million tons, considered sufficient to maintain stable supply and domestic prices.

This strengthening of domestic production also opens up opportunities for exports. The government projects that corn exports in 2026 may reach around 52,900 tons, as the improved quality and quantity of Indonesian corn create space in international markets without disrupting domestic supply fulfilment. Astawa emphasised that this plan ensures farmers’ harvests can be optimally absorbed, preventing excessive stock accumulation at the farm level and maintaining market balance. The government has previously set the Government Purchase Price (HPP) for corn through a policy following Presidential Instruction Number 10 of 2025 — establishing an HPP of IDR 5,500 per kilogram for 18–20% moisture content corn at the farmer level and IDR 6,400 per kilogram at Bulog warehouses for corn with up to 14% moisture and low aflatoxin levels — as part of efforts to support farmers and food price stability.
