Indonesia’s Trade Balance Continues to Be in Surplus

According to official statistics reported by Indonesia’s central statistics agency (BPS), the country’s trade balance maintained a positive performance, recording a trade surplus of about USD 38.54 billion from January to November 2025—an increase of approximately USD 9.30 billion compared to the same period last year, and the 67th consecutive month of surplus since May 2020. This sustained surplus was primarily driven by strong non-oil and gas exports, which contributed about USD 56.15 billion to the overall positive balance, while the oil and gas sector continued to run a deficit of roughly USD 17.61 billion. The growth in exports was largely supported by processed industrial goods, with machinery, electric equipment, animal/vegetable fats and oils, and mineral fuels among the main export categories. China, the United States, and India remained the top destinations for Indonesian non-oil and gas exports, together accounting for more than 42% of total export value. Meanwhile, total imports rose slightly, led by increased purchases of capital goods, though oil and gas imports declined.

Despite the continued surplus, the trade figures also reflect challenges in the external environment—including slower demand for some commodity exports and persistent structural deficits in the oil and gas sector. The sustained trade surplus has important implications for Indonesia’s external resilience, supporting foreign exchange reserves and the stability of the rupiah amid global economic uncertainties. However, policy efforts to diversify export markets and reduce dependence on key commodity sectors are seen as essential to maintaining positive trade performance in the future.
