Makassar Launches Maiden Export of 15 Tons of Octopus to Japan, Bolstering Fishery Downstreaming

Makassar City has marked a major milestone in its economic strategy with the inaugural export of approximately 14-15 tons of frozen octopus to Japan. The shipment, contained within a 20-foot container by PT Nirvana Niaga Sejahtera, was officially released by Makassar Mayor Munafri Arifuddin on Monday, December 15, 2025. This export is a key move to strengthen the city's fishery downstreaming initiative, which aims to increase the value-add of local seafood commodities and enhance the competitiveness of Makassar's products in the international market.

The Mayor hailed the export as tangible proof that Makassar's marine potential can yield significant economic returns when managed with proper standards and processing. He stressed that the success of the export, which is expected to be a sustainable venture given the huge, unlimited demand from the Japanese partner, is critical to improving the welfare of coastal communities and fishermen. The increased added value from processing is designed to create new jobs and boost fishermen’s incomes, aligning with the national agenda to prove that Indonesian fishery products can consistently meet and compete with stringent global standards.
