Indonesia’s Tin Exports Surge as Supply Pressures Ease

Indonesia’s tin exports rebounded strongly in November, signaling that concerns over supply disruptions caused by the government’s crackdown on illegal mining are beginning to ease. Shipments from the world’s second-largest tin producer nearly tripled month-on-month to 7,459 tons, with an export value of USD 268 million, according to data from the Ministry of Trade. This recovery followed a sharp decline in October, when exports fell to 2,643 tons, the lowest level since January.

The normalization of exports has supported market confidence after tin prices rose 41% this year on the London Metal Exchange, making it one of the best-performing contracts. Improved export flows were driven by the conclusion of enforcement operations against smuggling and the reissuance of trade quotas. Looking ahead, the global tin market is expected to move toward a surplus next year as mining supply increases, including higher shipments from Myanmar, easing supply constraints while supporting stable market conditions.
