Indonesia is enhancing its commitment to climate action by strengthening blue carbon measurement standards for seagrass ecosystems to improve data credibility, coastal conservation, and participation in global carbon trading. The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries has launched a national seagrass blue carbon measurement manual, serving as the first standardized technical reference for assessing carbon stocks across Indonesia’s coastal areas. This initiative supports science-based governance and reinforces Indonesia’s role in global climate change mitigation through measurable, valid, and accountable data.
Indonesia is home to 15 of the approximately 60 seagrass species found worldwide, making these ecosystems a valuable natural asset. Seagrass meadows are highly effective carbon sinks, contributing 10–18% of shallow marine carbon stocks while covering less than 0.2% of the seabed. Through supportive regulations and integrated technical guidance—from field surveys to data management—the government aims to strengthen conservation efforts, prevent carbon release caused by ecosystem degradation, and ensure that blue carbon utilization delivers both environmental sustainability and economic benefits for coastal communities.
