Indonesia has officially launched its first commercial export of frozen durian to China, marking a historic milestone in the country’s agricultural trade. The shipment, totaling 48 tons and valued at around IDR 5.1 billion (about USD 305,000), was sent after nearly two years of negotiations and preparation. This inaugural export came following the signing of a protocol on frozen durian exports between Indonesia and the General Administration of Customs of the People’s Republic of China (GACC) on May 25, 2025. The frozen durian, processed in West Java, was shipped from Tanjung Priok Port in Jakarta to Qingdao Port in China. Previously, Indonesian durian destined for China was routed indirectly through neighboring countries, where it was processed and repackaged before entering the Chinese market. Direct exports under a government-to-government agreement now open a new chapter for Indonesian durian producers and exporters.
The head of the Indonesian Agricultural Quarantine Agency (Barantin) described this achievement as the result of a long and resource-intensive process, reflecting strong cooperation between Indonesian and Chinese authorities. Indonesian durian exporters and industry associations have welcomed the opportunity, highlighting China’s large durian market and strong demand for tropical fruit. With this new direct access, Indonesia aims to expand its share in the Chinese market, which analysts estimate to be worth billions of dollars annually. Industry stakeholders also believe that direct exports will reduce logistics costs and provide greater economic benefits for local farmers and businesses.
