Indonesia Expects 19.34% Rise in Domestic Tourists for Christmas and New Year 2026

Indonesia’s Ministry of Tourism forecasts a strong surge in travel activity during the 2025/2026 Christmas and New Year holiday period, projecting more than 1.36 million foreign tourist arrivals and over 120 million domestic tourist trips in December 2025. Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana noted that the projections reflect a 10.72% rise in international visitors and a 19.34% increase in domestic travel compared with December 2024. The Ministry attributes this momentum to enhanced promotions, transportation fare discounts, and collaborative efforts across government agencies. Popular destinations are expected to remain consistent, with beaches, lakes, and marine attractions leading at 58.6%, followed by culinary hubs, mountain areas, zoos, and tourist villages.

To further boost year-end travel demand, the Ministry has prepared transportation incentives—such as discounted air, train, and ferry tickets—and 65 curated holiday tour packages developed by 23 industry partners, covering priority destinations nationwide. Widiyanti emphasized that these initiatives are designed not only to attract more tourists but also to stimulate economic activity across regions. The government anticipates travel patterns similar to last year’s 225.86 million recorded movements, reinforcing confidence that Indonesia’s tourism sector will maintain strong performance through the holiday season.
