Indonesia’s Minister for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (KP2MI), Mukhtarudin, met with Ambassador to Italy Junimart Girsang to discuss plans to deploy 500,000 Indonesian workers overseas, with Italy expected to receive 100,000. Of the total, 300,000 will be vocational high school (SMK) graduates with specialized skills, and 200,000 from the general workforce. The program emphasizes sending trained workers with middle-to-high level skills, particularly for Italy’s nursing and hospitality sectors, aligning with President Prabowo Subianto’s focus on leveraging the demographic bonus and expanding opportunities for Gen Z workers.
To facilitate the initiative, Indonesia plans to draft a Government-to-Government (G-to-G) proposal and revise Law No.18 of 2017 to centralize placement and protection under KP2MI. Technical discussions with Italian authorities are underway to ensure proper coordination and protection, aiming to maximize the impact of the workforce deployment while strengthening bilateral cooperation in skilled labor placement.
