At a two-plus-two meeting in Tokyo on November 17, 2025, Japan and Indonesia pledged to deepen their security partnership, particularly through the transfer of defense equipment and increased military collaboration. This forum—bringing together the foreign and defense ministers of both countries—marked the first such meeting since Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi took office and the first in more than four years between the two nations.
During the meeting, Japan’s Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi emphasised that enhanced cooperation with Indonesia—an ASEAN security-leader—will bolster peace, stability, and prosperity across the region. Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi underscored Japan’s intent to deepen bilateral security ties, including joint drills and personnel exchanges between the Japan Self‑Defense Forces and the Indonesian National Armed Forces.
