The Indonesian and South Korean governments are considering a partnership to restore mangroves and develop “blue carbon” initiatives, following a bilateral meeting held during COP 30 in Belém, Brazil. Indonesia’s Forestry Ministry highlighted that the country has rehabilitated over 165,000 hectares of mangrove out of its 3.44 million-hectare mangrove area, which represents about 23% of the global mangrove ecosystem.
South Korea, through its Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, expressed strong interest in Indonesia’s mangrove restoration experience and committed to collaborating on coastal resilience by contributing technology, research, and innovation. They also voiced support for Indonesia’s World Mangrove Center (WMC), a planned international knowledge hub for mangrove conservation. To move forward, both countries will form a technical team—facilitated by the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI)—to develop concrete programs around mangrove restoration and blue carbon.
