Indonesia underscored its leadership role in shaping ASEAN’s unified carbon market strategy at the COP 30 Climate Conference in Belem, Brazil. Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq encouraged ASEAN to embrace the spirit of “One Vision, One Identity, One Community” to advance a transparent and high-integrity regional carbon market. He emphasized that Indonesia has fully embedded climate objectives into its national planning through the Long-Term Strategy for Low Carbon and Climate Resilience (LTS-LCCR 2050) and the Second Nationally Determined Contribution (SNDC), which introduces more ambitious emission-reduction targets for 2035. Hanif also highlighted progress in climate governance, marked by Presidential Regulation No. 110/2025, enabling Indonesia’s carbon market to engage in global transactions. This framework is reinforced through IDX Carbon and Mutual Recognition Agreements with major international standard bodies, including Gold Standard, Global Carbon Council, Plan Vivo, Verra, and Puro Earth.
During the ASEAN Pavilion dialogue, Hanif presented Indonesia’s new climate diplomacy concept, “Carbon Connection for Climate Action,” designed as a collaborative platform within a high-integrity carbon market system. The session also reflected strong regional and international support: Japan reaffirmed its cooperation through the Joint Crediting Mechanism and plans to launch the JCM Implementation Agency in 2025, while Brunei stressed ASEAN’s potential to secure a strategic global role through stronger circular economy initiatives and funding mobilization. Indonesia’s forestry sector representative, Agus Budi Santosa, further noted that a unified ASEAN carbon market could greatly enhance cross-border mitigation efforts, advocating for a regional carbon standardization platform to ensure long-term integrity and maximize decarbonization opportunities.
