Indonesia has secured the top position globally for investment in the halal industry, according to the “State of the Global Islamic Economy Report 2024/2025.” Over the 2023–2024 period, investments in Indonesia’s halal sector reached approximately USD 1.6 billion, accounting for around 27% of the global total of USD 5.8 billion sourced from the five leading countries in this sector. According to the Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, this milestone reflects growing global confidence in Indonesia as a hub for halal investment, underpinned by a positive and expanding ecosystem.
Despite this achievement, Indonesia still faces challenges in elevating its export performance within the halal industry. In 2023, the country ranked ninth worldwide for halal product exports to member states of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), with exports valued at USD 12.33 billion. Meanwhile, its halal product imports from OIC countries stood significantly higher at USD 29.64 billion, indicating a trade imbalance. Minister Kartasasmita emphasised that Indonesia’s abundant natural resources, growing industrial base, and large domestic market give the country a comparative advantage — and that strengthening the national halal industry ecosystem, for exampl,e through cooperation agreements between the Ministry of Industry and the Badan Penyelenggara Jaminan Produk Halal (BPJPH), is key to becoming a major halal-producer and exporter in the future.
