Great Potential: Indonesia Strengthens Palm Frond Exports

Indonesia is preparing to expand its palm frond exports, a sector with significant growth potential. Converting palm waste into exportable commodities allows the country to meet global demand for eco-friendly products that can be used for handicrafts, cleaning tools, and other applications. As a leading exporter, Indonesia primarily ships palm fronds to India, Pakistan, and several countries in South Asia and the Middle East.

According to data from the Indonesian Central Statistics Agency (BPS) and the Indonesia Eximbank (LPEI), the export value of nipa and palm fronds rose 11.44% year-on-year to USD 29.32 million in 2023, up from USD 26.31 million in 2022. Although exports fell by 27.59% to USD 10.18 million in the first half of 2024, shipments to Pakistan, the Philippines, and Vietnam increased. The Palm Estate Fund Management Agency (BPDP) is working with stakeholders and farmers nationwide to develop small and medium enterprises (SMEs) using palm fronds, turning waste into economic opportunities. Through innovative training programs and promotional activities, farmers and SMEs are producing export-ready products, livestock feed, and eco-friendly biochar, strengthening local economies and creating sustainable jobs.
