West Java Explores Rattan Product Exports to African and Middle Eastern Markets

Dinas Perindustrian dan Perdagangan (Disperindag) Provinsi Jawa Barat reveals that several rattan craftsmen from the region have been exploring export markets in various countries across Southeast Asia, North Africa, and the Middle East. Although rattan products such as furniture and handicrafts have been marketed in these regions, the quantity exported remains relatively low. Consequently, Disperindag Jabar is actively communicating with relevant parties to increase the quantity of rattan product exports to these countries. Noneng Komara Nengsih, Head of Disperindag Jabar, highlights efforts to expand the market for rattan products, including targeting Australia as a potential market. Despite ongoing efforts, the export achievement of rattan furniture and similar products from Jabar is not yet optimal, totaling around 17 million USD from January to February 2024. This can be attributed to global conditions and conflicts in Europe, which significantly affect export activities, especially to European countries.

Noneng emphasizes the importance of identifying potential export destinations and facilitating rattan craftsmen to overcome challenges such as high costs associated with exporting to Europe. Disperindag Jabar is concentrating on developing rattan products, particularly in Cirebon, and intensifying promotions across various platforms. Additionally, they have established the Rattan Industry Development Service Unit Office in Cirebon to support this endeavor.
